Campanula peregrina

L.

Also: peregrinae

Infrageneric Taxa

  • Subgenus Pterophyllum Damboldt, sect. nov.

  • Type. Campanula peregrina L., Mant. Alt. 204(1771)1)

Nomenclatuur

Classis II. Epanthae. 21. Campanulaceae. II. Campanula. 6. Campanula peregrina. Tabula 83.

Synonym:
* Campanula peregrina. Linn. Mant.II.p.204Sp.pl.Ed. Willd.I.p.906.
* Campanula primulaefolia. Brot. lusit.I.p.288. ….Phytogr. lusit. Fasc.I.n.9. Tab.1. et 2.
* Campanula Trachelium. Brot. lusit.I.p.287.2)

Bornmuller in Beih.Bot.Centr. 61B:72(1941) mentioned that a Sintenis gathering (Sint. 1890:3522) from Egin (B7 Erzincan:Kemaliye) represented an undescribed species of Michauxia. The incomplete specimen (without capsules and only two flowers) was given the exsiccata nomen, Michauxia spathulaefolia, by Haussknecht. The material I have studied from the Sintenis collection in Lund agrees with the description given by Bornmuller. The two flowers have a 5-fid calyx and corolla; calyx appendages are absent and the corolla is 1/3 or 1/4 divided; the style is trifid. The plants therefore belong not to Michauxia but to Campanula and possibly represent a new species related to Campanula peregrina L., but the material is insufficient for description.3)

Names

Fr.: Campanula voyageuse4)

P.: Campanula pregrina

Habitus

Character. Hispidissima, caule simplici, foliis dentato-crenatis in petiolum alatum angustatis sessilibusque, floribus axillaribus. Diagnosis. Caulis erectus, simplicissimus. Perennis.5)

Herbae biennes.6)
Erect, rather bristly-stemmed biennial, 2-3 ft. Flower stems simple.
Obs.3. Nimis affinis Campanula peregrine Lin. (Mant.p.20 4.) et Campanula lanuginosae La Marck (Dic.Encycl.Tom. I.p.584.)

Leaves

Folia inferiora petiolata, lamina in petiolum decurrente; superiora sessilia; omnia acuta, dentato-crenata, crenis denticulatis, rugosa.8)

Rosette leaves ovate to spatulate, to 4 in. long, crenate, rugose, stem leaves sessile, ovate, acute.

Flowers

Pedicelli solitarii, binive. Calyx laciniis lanceolatis corolla paullo brevioribus. Corolla coerulea. Floraison. Ete.10)

Stylus filiformis, trifidus.11)
Flowers in spikes, calyx ciliate, without appendages, lobes broad, corolla deep violet toward the center with lighter lobes, funnelform.

Chromosomes

The peculiar, often cultivated, Campanula primulifolia Brot. from S Portugal seems to be related to Campanula peregrina (both species have the same chromosome number of 2n = 26) and should therefore be placed in the same section.12)

Fruit

Capsula trilocularis, poris ca. medianis dehiscens.14)

Seed available, in small quantity. Species actually grown or used for breeding 15)

Origin

Mediterranean region. According to Dr.J. Holmboe book in Cyprus are found growing at shady places, common especially in the valleys of Troodos mountains 18).

Observations.
* 2. Planta in hortis nomine Campanula peregrinae culta, minor plerumque nostra, omnibus partibus contracta, praesertim calyce, corolla, foliisque; nec tamen vere differre videtur.19)
